Untitled (Escondido, CA) 2016
Medium is proud to welcome John Gossage as the 6th annual Keynote Lecturer at the 2017 Medium Festival of Photography. Known for his extensive publications in photography (over 20 photobooks to his name), John Gossage uses the camera as a storyteller and a poet, making images that explore unseen pockets of the urban environment. He is renowned by academics for pioneering a sophisticated visual vocabulary, challenging previously held assumptions about the role of photography as contemporary art. The artist’s photographs function as elements of a larger stories, creating narratives and drawing our attention to obscure histories, told through exquisitely crafted prints.
John Gossage was the second photographer to be represented by the eponymous Leo Castelli Gallery in New York City (Lewis Baltz was the first), and had his first exhibition at the gallery alongside Jasper Johns. His seminal book The Pond, (Aperture, 1985) took a contemporary view of an urban respite influenced by his own relationship to Thoreau’s Walden Pond. Join us on Friday, Oct. 27 for the 2017 Keynote Lecture with John Gossage. Discounted registration is open through Oct. 15.
