Portfolio Reviews at Medium
We receive a lot of questions about portfolio reviews, increasingly so as the registration close date of Oct. 1 draws near. Photographers often want to know who attends, are they for me, and how do Medium’s portfolio reviews differ from the others? Medium’s review event is part of a larger gathering of creative photographers from across the country, which culminate in our weekend-long Present Tense lecture series. Portfolio reviews offer many things to many people, from industry connections to new peer networks, exhibition opportunities and book deals. Sometimes they’re one of the best ways to set a personal deadline for getting a new body of work complete.
We’ve been told one of the most unique parts about Medium is that we offer one portfolio review participant the opportunity to return as a Second Sight guest lecturer the following year. This means we pay your expenses. Not many review events offer something like this (in fact, we don’t know of a single one that does, aside from Medium, of course). Our aim is to help photographers expand their career in a relaxed, inspiring, and small review event. This helps everybody’s attitude and keeps both photographers and reviewers in an open, receptive state. It’s also a great opportunity to see a photographer’s lecture who’s name is probably new to most of us.
Judging from last year, our guest reviewers and photographers said Medium was a place where walls were broken down and everyone felt an opportunity to connect with other photographers in an informal yet engaged environment. This made us immensely proud!
Portfolio reviews offer a rich opportunity to develop new and meaningful friendships. As a photographer myself, I’ve attended (and continue to attend) many portfolio review events. I believe they are great places to make connections and a chance to expand your own ambitions and get new work seen by influential tastemakers. Reviewers are hungry to see new work, and are here to develop an understanding of your contribution to the medium itself. Each review event offers a chance to begin a new relationship that can last decades. Something that’s unlikely to happen from difficult-to-schedule meetings with curators, photo editors, or gallery directors.
Are portfolio reviews for you? Come to Medium this fall and find out! We’d love to learn about your work and have an opportunity to bring you back, on us!
